In the battle of the superpower city in Australia my vote would go to Melbourne. Sure Sydney has the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge but Melbourne has Alley Ways and Wall Art. Sydney has a big business, I’m too good for you New York type of feeling while Melbourne has a down to earth New Age Hippy Portland like feeling.
My only complaint with Melbourne is that there is no surf, however just an hour and a half away is Torquay, home of the famous bells beach which can produce world class waves.
Where to Stay
Either stay in downtown Melbourne or a 15 minute tram ride away in the city of St.Kilda Beach. For me the choice was easy I’ll stay at the beach and go to the city when I want.
What to Do
Go on one of the Free Walking Tours – every hostel and hotel has information on them. The guides are local and very informative, it gives you a good overview of the history and sights of the city and allows you to decide what more you’d like to see more of later.
